The Effects Of Coffee Cherry Extract (Arabica) On Liver And Kidney Function In Streptozotocin-Induced And High-Fat Diet-Fed White Rats (Rattus norvegicus)

Streptozotocin (STZ) is cytotoxic to β-cells, which normally respond to glucose stimulation by releasing insulin. STZ can induce diabetes mellitus (DM), modeling both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Diabetes mellitus can lead to renal complications, specifically diabetic nephropathy. This study aimed to determine the effect of coffee cherry (Arabica) extract administration on liver and kidney function in white rats (*Rattus norvegicus*) induced with streptozotocin and a high-fat diet. This was a true experimental study utilizing a randomized posttest-only control group design. The study sample consisted of 20 rats divided into five groups. The research was conducted from October 2024 to November 2024. Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and the Kruskal-Wallis test. One-Way ANOVA results indicated no significant effect of coffee cherry extract administration on liver and kidney function. Administration of the extract did not significantly affect SGOT levels (p=0.092; p>0.05) or SGPT levels (p=0.401; p>0.05). Regarding urea levels, the significance value was p=0.422 (p>0.05). Kruskal-Wallis analysis also showed no significant effect of the extract on kidney function; specifically, there was no significant effect on creatinine levels (p=0.067; p>0.05). In conclusion, the administration of coffee cherry extract to white rats (*Rattus norvegicus*) induced with streptozotocin and a high-fat diet did not affect SGOT, SGPT, urea, or creatinine levels.
