Abstract

Skin damage caused by free radicals, such as wrinkles and dryness, is a major concern in skin health. Kirinyuh leaves (Chromolaena odorata L.) are known to be rich in bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, which have antioxidant potential. Utilizing this natural ingredient in cosmetics, especially lotion formulations, offers a safe and effective solution to protect the skin from the negative effects of free radicals. This study aims to test the antioxidant activity of kirinyuh leaf extract, determine the optimum lotion formulation using the Simplex Lattice Design method, and evaluate the antioxidant activity of the produced lotion. The results show that the ethanol extract of kirinyuh leaves has very strong antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 43.057μg/mL. Through the optimization of lotion formula using Simplex Lattice Design, an optimal formula was obtained with a proportion of stearic acid 16% and triethanolamine 4%. The lotion formulated with kirinyuh leaf extract, particularly formula 3 (extract concentration 20%), showed the highest antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 87.061 μg/mL, while also meeting good physical quality standards including adhesion, spreadability, pH, and viscosity. Thus, it can be concluded that kirinyuh leaf extract has strong antioxidant potential, the Simplex Lattice Design method is effective in optimizing lotion formulations, and the kirinyuh leaf extract lotion shows significant antioxidant activity, making it a promising topical product for skin protection.
